Drop One Charge In Area Deer Case Ponder Another
Erie County Judge Lindley McClelland threw out a charge of illegally harboring a wild animal against Richard Zimmer of Cambridge Springs. A second charge of failing to produce a deer's head on demand was taken under advisement as game officials disputed the animal’s status and evidence. Zimmer had cared for an injured deer found with a bullet wound, while his wife and daughter bottle fed it. Officials gave mixed reports on the animal’s condition, and McClelland warned against convicting a good Samaritan. A separate matter involves a second deer on Zimmer’s farm. a deputy warden says it was to be destroyed while Zimmer claims it was a legal kill. Harrison Zimmer was convicted previously of illegal meat possession for the second deer, with officials calling it a button buck.
