The Corry Teachers Association contributed seventy five dollars to the light fund for Loveland Field Height. The drive continues in the factories this week and is expected to push the total over one thousand dollars toward the two thousand dollar goal.
Jeano W. Baldwin, pioneer Erie realtor and partner in Baldwin Brothers Co, died at his home 928 West Sixth Street Erie Friday morning. He was 59, long ill, recently traveled to Florida for health. He was brother of G. Deniel Baldwin, co owner of the firm. In a separate item, Fritz Kuhn, bandleader of the German American band in New York, lost an appeal from a December 1939 conviction for larceny and forgery while serving a Sing Sing sentence of 23 to 5 years.
Corry Align school will graduate a class of 107 members at the commencement exercises to be held at the Senior High School on Wednesday. Salutatory honors were won by Horis Arlene Bergman. the program is being arranged by the Corry Ministerial Association with services beginning Sunday, July 1, and continuing through the week with events listed for June 9 to June 13 and alumni reunion plans.
Lineal draft board at Union City reports 18 007 men to be drafted in June under a revised exam process. Pennsylvania registrants include 17 044 whites and 1 004 blacks, with exams May 21 to June 21 at Erie as a center, and follow up periods before induction. Quotas are set by county and city with dates in May and June across various local boards.
Moscow reports Soviet Russia withdrew recognition of Yugoslavia Belgium and Norway as sovereign states. The board and staff led by Dr Carl Parry await authorization from President Roosevelt and Price Administrator Leon Henderson to seek congressional power to regulate the business.
Washington May 9 Administr ation circles today looked for the arrival of Professor John Maynard Keynes to advance drastic methods for fighting inflation and financing the defense program. Keynes arrived in New York and would consult on phases of the lend lease program. Officials want his views on Britain's plan of forced savings through taxes, tied to the British postal savings system for postwar credit. The idea, urged by Keynes, would curb inflation and aid reconstruction, with similar talk in administration circles.
Cairo dispatch notes remnants of resisting Iraqi army units retreating to Ramadi and Falluja while fighting with British troops in Tact enters its eighth day. President's son Trey says British seem to have the situation well in hand as reports of Iraqi premier Rashid Ali al-Gailan's force left Baghdad circulate amid bombing of Baghdad airport and other Iraqi points. DETROIT May Reuters bureau said today a powder bomb was discovered in the tool and building area of the Ford Motor Company plant. The Federal Bureau of Investigation would not confirm the finding but said it was reviewing a report and investigating all such threats related to defense facilities.
A military board investigates the death of 21 year old Willie Silvermin of Fort Erie who was shot while attempting to escape Carlisle military barracks. The guard fired after he ignored a warning shot and a second shot wounded him fatally. He had been confined since February after a two month sentence. The shooter’s name was not released.
London May report from Associated Press states a British 1,000-ton cruiser Cornwall sank a German commerce raider in the Indian Ocean. The communique says 27 merchant seamen were saved, 53 German crew captured, and a life raider rescued.
A Warren, Ohio area road incident left Allen A. Horry injured after a Chevrolet truck owned by Floyd Buchanan skidded on brine and crashed into a telephone pole. Horry suffered cuts and bruises while other bystanders avoided serious harm as the vehicle left the highway and wrapped around the pole.
Patrolman Hoss Mead notes widespread damage to meters and parking devices including smashed handles twisted coins and slugs jammed into slots. Several machines out of service. gum on coins found. Police expect a fast restoration and vow arrests if suspects are caught.
