Hunger marchers surged on Springfield demanding immediate food relief for about 30 000 destitute families. They threatened a spectacle to sway the nation as they pressed to reopen relief stations after the house defeated Gov Hornes sales tax relief plan. State police and guards surrounded the capitol and governor mansion as crowds gathered.
State Emergency Relief Board announced a policy to cut relief rolls if recipients refuse employment offers. Robert L. Johnson urged public cooperation to report refusals, with noncompliant individuals to face discharge from relief and potential transfer to county poor boards as unemployables. Reinstatement procedures and automatic reinstatement certificates will apply when employment is found.
Rep J P Moran of Allegheny County seeks power for municipalities to build and operate water gas and electric plants. Five men dressed as police officers robbed the Edison Electric Appliance Company on Chicago South Side. They disarmed staff, seized an $8,800 payroll from cashier Mary Moran and fled in a car marked police. The caper echoes a 1920 Moran gang incident.
Amelia Earhart lands at Newark airport after a solo non-stop flight of about 2100 miles from Mexico City to New York in 14 hours 18 minutes 50 seconds, the first such feat between the two cities. Crowds estimated at 15 000, recalling 1927 trans Atlantic era. Captain Emilio Carranza died in a crash on his attempted return flight.
In Muntsville Texas May 9 Raymond Hamilton faces the electric chair after Governor James V. Allred refused clemency. Hamilton boasted no prison could hold him and faces execution for the slaying tied to a prison break and the murder of prison guard Major Crowson.
Wayne township commencement exercises will be held Friday evening at Beaverdam. Eight grade students will present a program of exercises including march, graduating class, vocational, salutatory, and valedictory. Notable participants listed include Kathryn Paykov, Melbourne Sorenson, Shirley Harvey, and John Frankovich, with Supt. B. R. Hadlock presiding.
Washington May 3 Senator Elmer Thomas Oklahoma leader of the Patman bonus forces refused to accept any compromises advanced so far as a means to obtain votes to override a veto. He indicated he would fight further for the votes needed to sustain the veto. President Roosevelt sought a high level meeting with Gen Frank Hines Henry Morgenthau Jr and other aides to discuss his intended veto of the Patman bill.
Three men rode a capsized home-made boat across the Clarion River near flood stage. William Lyle, 63, clung to the overturned craft and swam ashore with his son Lyle and David Fink after one man was swept three miles downstream. Lyle suffered shock but recovered. rescuers from a CCC camp later attended the men.
Two hundred veterans of the Spanish American War and their wives are expected for the Northwest Council United Spanish American War Veterans meeting in Corry on Sunday May 12. Delegates arrive from Bradford Ridgway Mercer and Iaron. Lieut Clyde D Wilcox Camp No 121 hosts at 2 pm State Armory. Mayor Glen Miller delivers welcome as Corry marks first North Council gathering in five years and hosts visiting veterans and their spouses. A H Stokes of Hamburg NY visits Corry today.
30,000 crowd in Cleveland as Rev. Charles Coughlin and supporters build a national union of socialization fans. Ohio and Michigan units formed. New York meeting set for Madison Square Garden May 22 to extend influence, aiming to pressure Congress and party platforms. A mass rally booed Senator Robert J. bulkley as organizers push for a stronger union voice.
Harrisburg May 9. Harry B. Kalodner, secretary to Governor George H. Wardle, has been named acting head of the revenue department due to the illness of H Edgar Bates. Kalodner will serve in dual roles with no raise. The governor's secretary gets 7000 annually while the revenue secretary earns 12000. There is speculation that Liam Barnes plans to leave the revenue department to run for state supreme court justice in the fall elections with administration backing.
A likely infant clinic may start in Corry under Mrs. Ora Harper who was named nurse in the state health department at an annual salary of $1980. She serves under Dr. J.T. Strimple health officer for Evie county and covers Corry and Union City. The Union City infant clinic exists and Corry is expected to begin a similar operation.
Miss Beatrice Shaffer outlined city school music operations at the Kiwanis Club luncheon at Hotel Corry. Sixteen high school orchestra members performed, marking Music Week. The club voted floral support for the Wy W. Memorial Day program. Guests included Charles Rich and Robert Lynch of Pittsburgh.
City council met with J Parsons of the Erie Railroad after an inspection of a proposed storm sewer along the railroad right of way east from Maple Avenue. Officials say permission from the railroad is likely and the project could be launched soon if granted.
Corry Hospital faces worsened finances due to an indefinit e delay in the February quarter state appropriation. At a regular meeting in the library building, directors including Barker Brown Defis ay Histon Houghton and Kelly heard a finances report from S B Histon noting the welfare dept delay. The board hopes for early funds to allow payment of the quarterly allocation. Miss Ethel Cole reported April totals: 98 patients, 451 days of service, 201 free. The census averaged 15 with 14 births, 4 deaths, 19 major and 20 minor operations. Elevator repairs and redecorating plans were approved. Dr A G Ross and Dr A G Neary of New Rochelle, N Y attended to discuss hospital affairs.
May 9 Pittsburgh report says at a chamber of commerce meeting the proposed plan to canalize the Beaver and Mahoning rivers aims to move Youngstown to the Ohio River. The discussion framed the project as a strategic shift affecting regional waterways and local city interests.
In Harrisburg on May 8 the Republican Senate and Governor George H. announced a tax plan to fund unemployment relief through June 1, 1936. It includes corporate income tax six percent, a one cent levy on oleo, a five cent stamp tax, gasoline and mercantile tax increases, and other measures totaling about 60 million dollars. The plan, opposed by Senator Buckman, secures funds for 1,750,000 unemployed and supports Hopkins relief asks.
