Judges Rule Pa Must Pay For Welfare Abortions

A three judge federal panel in Pittsburgh ruled Pennsylvania must fund abortions for welfare recipients. The decision, 2-1, says the state cannot discriminate by treatment method for pregnancy in the first trimester and cites possible wider impact on federal aid debates. The suit, by five welfare recipient women denied abortions at McGee-Womens Hospital, could affect future state and federal legislation and may go to the Supreme Court if appealed.
