Community Court Bill Passes Amid Debate in Harrisburg

In Harrisburg the Senate approved a community court bill amid sharp objections from Allegheny lawmakers. Senator Lamb condemned the measure as a mistake while Senator Bell defended changes that shifted judges to a county system and elected them at large. The bill would set 10 year terms and a $20,000 salary, with Pittsburgh retaining its elected justices while police magistrates remain appointed. A separate Pittsburgh provision would replace the city’s justices of the peace and aldermen but not police magistrates. In a separate item, two boys aged 7 and 8 started a forest fire near Draguignan, France, burning about 500 acres before it was controlled.
