AP reports at the American Society for Microbiology meeting that a nonfatal viral infection, such as the common cold, may protect against leukemia and cancer by competing with cancer viruses in human cells. Dr. E Frederick Wheelock of Western Reserve University described mouse experiments where benign viruses temporarily blocked leukemia, implying immunity arises from viral competition rather than interferon. Further work aims to see if leukemia patients experience fewer colds before diagnosis.
