Corry reports 28 new measles cases in two weeks amid influenza fears. Health officials note nine cases in the past seven days, with five whooping cough cases also recorded as quarantines continue. Spread now appears citywide beyond junior elementary students.
United Press reports cavalry and infantry from the Kentucky National Guard moving toward Harlan to quell labor unrest in coal towns of southeastern Kentucky. A force of more than 300 militiamen gathered in Evarts under Police Chief Asa Cusick, awaiting the troops.
Police say seven men are under arrest with three sought in a large poultry theft ring case. More than 4000 chickens allegedly stolen from 43 coops in Apollo district and sold in Armstrong Westmoreland and Indiana counties. Cans of chicken found at a relative’s home linked to one suspect. several names listed as suspects.
Willard and Ernest Brockman report steady progress on their Allegheny River voyage toward the Gulf. They note calm navigation with small audiences along the route and describe stopping to pass through locks and a dyke, with health good and the boat riding the river well.
Ada Burroughs, aide to Bishop Cannon, refused to answer Nye Committee questions about 1928 campaign activity. After a brief session, the hearing closed with prospects of possible prosecution for defying the committee's authority.
Donald Patterson, a third youth from the Whe last week case, was paroled under Chief Ruppersburg after pleading guilty to breaking and entering, larceny, and receiving stolen goods. Sentences are suspended until September when Judge Hirt will review the youths’ cases. Also reported, seven horses and livestock burned at a Scott township farm causing about 300000 in damage. A Belgian stallion valued at 4000 was among the losses.
Secretary of State Stimson said he informed Haitian Minister Dante Bellegarde that Bellegarde's explanation of remarks about Major General Smedley D Butler's capture of a fort in Haiti satisfactorily terminated the incident. Stimson advised the navy department to the same effect.
Sheriff Burney Maxwell planned to draft men and women at random to obtain a jury for the second murder trial of Virgil Kirkland. Judge Grant Crumpacker cited unwillingness of locals to sit in judgment of the 19 year old Gary youth in the gun party slaying of Arleay Drayes. WW Miller returned from Pittsburgh for a sister’s death. Lois Sullivan of Drie arrived for a visit and will attend a Junior Senior reception. Mrs Frank J Frost left for Buffalo for a visit with friends.
Harrisburg May 7 Governor Pinchot signed Stevenson’s bill appropriating 1.5 million for the Pymatuning swamp project. The plan calls for an impounding reservoir at the swamp outlet in Crawford county to form the area’s largest artificial lake for recreation boating fishing and related uses.
The junior and senior classes at Cony High School, with invited guests, prepare a Friday night prom at the Hotel Cory dining room followed by a dance at the Junior High gym. A banquet, program with addresses, and decorations are planned, with the Erie Night Hawk providing music for the dancing portion.
The New York Federal Reserve Bank reduced its rediscount rate to 11 and 2 percent, the lowest in its history, effective December 24th. The move lowers the rate from 2 percent and marks a significant shift in policy.
Fire roared through a five story graystone armory in Buffalo destroying the 106th Regiment HQ and the American Scandinavian church. Twenty five firefighters were overcome by strokes during the blaze which endangered nearby homes and factory equipment.
United States Steel and American Can dropped to fresh lows with Steel at 109 7 8 and Can at 101 7 8 as short covering and margin concerns influenced the market. The midday decline followed speculation over New York discount rates and brokerages reported margin pressures amid wide market weakness.
May 7 Copenhagen reports hopeful news on the search for Augustine Courtauld, the British youth stranded on the Greenland Ice Cap. Capt. Albin Abrenders leads relief attempts while a Swedish team prepares for a separate rescue stroke.
The coastwise steamship New York split the motor dredge Trimount amidships off London Connecticut. Three to four lives were lost and five rescued before the hulk sank near Race Rock. Missing include Peter Webb of Everett and Edward Anderson, Trimount crew members.
Roy Bell of Waterford spoke to the Kiwanis Club, sharing years of animal training and stories on animals and their habits. He answered questions and discussed the club’s swimming pool project and other committee plans, with guests W. C. Marritt and Frank Brooks attending.

Gov Pinchot launches speaking tour to rally support for abolishing the Public Service Commission and creating a fair rate board but anti administration forces in the Senate show firm opposition with 28 of 80 members against the measures. The plan is to bring the bills to a floor roll call despite doubt over committee action.
Alis Janes D. Barkey, 41, of Ashtabula, pleaded guilty to passing worthless checks and received a sentence of two and a half to five years in the Western Penitentiary plus a $1 fine. Agnés Marsh, the alleged accomplice, had charges dropped, though five cities expressed a desire to prosecute her.
Youngstown May 7 United Press reports wage hikes for steel industry tin mill workers. Pay rises apply May 2 through June as first increase in nearly two years. Wages tied to sheet market with March and April selling prices up about 42 percent above last year.
