New York May 1 a rumored unconfirmed sinking of the Lusitania is circulated via cables from London. Cunard officials refuse to confirm details while promising updates, with later dispatches noting patrols and potential torpedo threats near Kinsale Ireland and Queenstown.
A former Corry couple, W. J. Bayley and his wife, faced Judge Hinckley in Warren County Court over the custody of the ten year old daughter of Mrs. Hammond of Philadelphia. The child had been with the Bayleys for nearly two years while the mother sought custody. A writ of habeas corpus was issued. the case was heard but settled out of court with custody awarded to the child’s Philadelphia grandparents.
London reports based on Pekin dispatches indicate China has yielded to Japan on major demands and only details remain to be settled. The government and cabinet met overnight, sending an answer to Japan as talks continued, with cautious hope a full accord may avert broader conflict.

Turkish forces on Gallipoli claim successes against the British, with heavy losses for the British near Sedd el Bahr. Dutch mine sweepers report removing 291 mines on the coast since the war began, including 54 French and 92 German mines.
