Senate Committee Approves Draft of Younger First
The Senate Armed Services Committee backed a plan to draft younger men first starting at age 19 while rejecting wholesale consolidation of local draft boards into regional Civil Service units. It gave only limited approval to replacing the induction process with a lottery system and suggested college deferments remain in place until undergraduates finish their degrees or reach 24. The measure faces broader congressional action as debates over extending the draft law continue.
