Guardsmen Hired to Protect Erie Stores

Three hundred merchants in outlying districts of Erie organized drastic action as crime rose. Six National Guardsmen are patrolling at night to protect stores, with no robberies reported since they started. They demand better police protection or a personnel shakeup, and threaten to withhold taxes. A note in a store window complains of shooting. Police Chief Detzol says he lacks support and only 17 officers are on night patrol. Vigilante efforts to guard storefronts are forming amid ongoing break-ins.
