Republican Leaders Say Johnson Killed Tax Bill Chance
Top House Republicans contended that Johnson wrecked the tax bill by accusing some lawmakers of blackmail over spending cuts. Rep. Byrnes warned the president ended the chances for a tax measure, as Ford and Bow criticized his remarks. Despite calls for deep cuts, prospects for any 10 percent income tax surcharge seemed dim. Johnson pressed for a tax bill tied to drastic spending reductions and noted Paris peace talks as a higher priority. Mills remained noncommittal as a Monday tax committee meeting looms.
