President Kennedy's minimum wage bill won strong approval in both chambers. The Senate backed the measure 64 to 28 and the House passed it 230 to 195 after concessions. The bill raises minimum pay from 1.00 to 1.15 an hour in four months and to 1.25 within two years, expanding coverage significantly.
Preschool children in Cory embraced a library reading hour during Library Week and spurred the College Women to keep the program at the public library. A 17 year old Episcopal Academy senior, Robert Weatherill, was missing after the Albatross cruise sank in the Gulf of Mexico. His mother Anne had sailed from New York to Nassau to meet him, but the ship never reached Nassau. Robert planned a marine biology career and the cruise fit his plans. His father, Robert Weatherill III, is a plant manager in Eddystone and said a letter from his son claimed everything was fine.
The Antoucha-Belles, Chapter No 2 of the Sisters of the Swish, issued a bold challenge to all chapters. They will play volleyball or softball, and also knit or bake, to prove their feminine mettle. Officers include Mrs Gene Maloney as high bustle and Mrs Edard Kovach as silver belle. They gathered at centennial HQ and opened a five- tenia finks campaign, with a meeting planned at Mrs Richard Clark's home next Wednesday.
The State Liquor Commission charged commercial operators and gamblers have hijacked bingo in New York. Chairman Jacob Grumet blamed weak enforcement and cited convicted gambler Wilcum P Buckner as a dominant force in the drive to privatize bingo. Hearings last five days will be sent to the Manhattan district attorney for possible criminal action. Buckner allegedly ran games for multiple organizations across Pennsylvania New York New Jersey Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands and Cuba.
Thirteen survivors of the Albatross cruise ship are due to dock in Tampa. Among the missing are the wives of crew members and several students from coal families. Two survivors are teenagers aged 15. The ship sank in a subtropical storm, with six trapped below decks. Survivors were later picked up by the Dutch freighter Grand Rio after a night at sea.
McCann, an American businessman detained in Ren China for ten years, died of cancer at 60 at Clark Air Force Base Hospital Manila shortly after his February release and border transport from Hung Kong. Arrested 1951, he faced a June 1951 sentence of 18 years. doctors said cancer worsened before his death. Senators Clask and Soot joined the Senate majority on the compromise mortgage bill vote.
