Industry Aides Attack NYS Rail Cutbacks
Buffalo area industry leaders urged against trimming western New York freight rail at an Interstate Commerce Commission hearing, arguing loss of rail service would threaten industry and agriculture. Witnesses cited Erie-Lackawanna lines supplying raw materials, higher farm costs if trucks substitute rail, and highway congestion already dense in the Northeast. Arthur B. Traver, Bufacon Inc. president, contended trucks can rival branded trains in efficiency.
