Republicans Overstage Convention Budget Issues

The Republican National Committee explains how it was outmaneuvered by Democrats over convention prep costs in Chicago. A special stand and decorations for the hall will cost about 14 000 dollars, with no provision in the Democrat contract for sharing this expense. Edward Hurley, Chicago committee chair, said he would pay seven thousand if needed. A program and ads were planned to raise the remaining funds amid ongoing party debate.

Little Fellows Turn: Babson Sees Small Firms Rising

Business statistician Roger Babson asserts that small and medium sized firms, efficiently run, will weather depression better than giants. He cites 57 of 1,600 industrials with profits last year, many small or below one million dollars, and argues that lean operations, flexible management, and close control let small shops profit from small orders despite high overhead for large plants. He warns against rapid growth and predicts a rebound driven by smaller enterprises as the economy shifts from heavy corporate scale.
