Methodists OK Drinking Smoking by Ministers
The United Methodist Church voted to strike out its written ban on ministers using or drinking alcohol and tobacco. Delegates approved a shift to emphasize self discipline and a stronger moral witness, favoring the spirit over the letter of conduct. Critics warned the change could upset rural congregations. The church, founded in 1784, has long opposed strong drink though early members sometimes drank. In a separate note, Bloodhorse Magazine editor Kent Hollingsworth was elected president of the National Turf Writers Association in Louisville.
