Weather slows RAF after eighth night of air raids
London May 1 British authorities reported eight straight nights of German raids tapered to armed reconnaissance. RAF crews destroyed 11 bombers over England and France, with three Nazi planes crashing near West Branch houses. Eight raiders were shot down along the northwest coast and in eastern England. The National Air Force said the raid they faced likely numbered under 50 aircraft and noted casualties but no major damage. Sunderland, a coal-exporting city on the Wear, was reportedly heavily shelled per a German radio brief, while British interception of the offensive indicated poor weather hindered the German attack.
