Search For Erie Slayer Getting Hot
MILLCHIEK Mullcreek and Erie Police officers may have missed capturing murder suspect Randy Thayer by less than five minutes last night. Responding to a call about 8 55 p.m., dozens of officers surrounded the residence of Stanley McDuff, with whom Thayer and his wife had lived for a short time. A neighbor Pat Macloch saw a man answering Thayer's description try to force his way in McDuff's home. Another neighbor said before police arrived she saw a man run from McDuff's home, into a car resembling Thayer's, and drive away. The weapon may have been a stolen 30 06 bolt action rifle rather than the earlier Mauser. McDuff said Thayer was his closest friend. He said he showed the gun to Randy before it turned up missing in a fire at McDuff's home. The gun's location remains uncertain as authorities investigate.
