Lipeani was captured. heavy fighting near Myakovtsy left about 2,000 Axis troops dead and many prisoners. Malinovsky’s Third Ukrainian Army pressed Odessa from the east and north, with advances up to 20 miles toward the Black Sea port. Continued operations promised on Page Three.
German communique says Allied force encircled near Cassino for hours and was annihilated after stubborn resistance. It reports German troops moved into positions on Monastery Hill and that Indian and New Zealand troops evacuated some areas. Air operations over the area continue while attacks persist at the Angio beachhead and a hospital area is bombed.
Allied air forces report the Nuernberg raid with heavy bomber losses for the Germans and a major Pacific push as Allied fleets threaten Truk Palau and Hollandia. Britains Bomber Command claims the largest single operation loss of 96 planes while Allied air units strike targets around Truk and Palau.
