Rescue Boys Float on Ice Island Near Millcreek Coast
Three Millcreek youths aged 15 to 16 were rescued from a drifting ice island on Lake Erie after winds pushed the ice about 75 yards from shore. West Lake Fire Chief Dick Schau said the Coast Guard alerted crews around 4:30 p.m. and Erie Water Bureau Chief Stanley Prater, in a nearby cottage, raced to help in a dinghy. Firefighters and Erie County Rescue Helicopters stood by as Prater ferried Kenneth Dingus, 15, Robert Mischler, 16, and John Lasky, 15, back to shore after about 45 minutes on the ice. The trio had used poles to move the ice closer to land before the wind pushed Hastwasa farther out.
