Lee Trevino collected $40,000 at the National Airline Open in Miami after edging Bob Menne in a sudden-death playoff. Menne, a rising pro from Andover, Mass., earned $22,800 in his first big chance, leaving the tour with a new wealthier status and a wary eye on next week’s Greensboro trials. Trevino, who also won earlier in Tucson, now leads the year’s money list and heads back to El Paso while managing a court appearance over a manager dispute.
Bobby Allison wins the Atlanta 500 on a late tires call after a 3 hour 34 minute race. Cale Yarborough leads most laps but loses the lead with 15 miles to go as Allison hits the final restart and pulls away to victory by five seconds.
In Baltimore the Bullets beat the Knicks 127-113 as Loughery played with broken ribs and a punctured lung, scoring 17 in 19 minutes alongside Unseld who grabbed 34 rebounds. Phoenix toppled the Lakers 119-96 with Hawkins 34 and Silas 25.
Nate Archibald of Texas-El Paso scored 35 points as his West team fell 116-102 to the East in the East West college all star game in Indianapolis. Charlie Scott earned game MVP honors for the East with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Purdue All American Rick Mount led the East with 25 points. Jim McMillian added 23. Archibald previously starred in Memphis, pushing his two all star outings to 63 points while boosting pro bargaining power with both leagues.
Barb dove in the one meter event for the 15 to 17 age group and placed fifth overall while representing the Allegheny Mountain Association District of the AAU. The regional meet covered eight districts from Connecticut to North Carolina with 11 competitors and 10 dives in the event. New Jersey won the first place team award Boost Corry It’s Good For You.
The East West Baseball Classic at Dodger Stadium drew 31,894 fans for a charity game honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Proceeds supported the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a proposed Atlanta memorial center. Ron Fairly MVP led the East in a 51 win while Frank Quilici did not play.
