Five Dead and City Firefight Toll Rises Amid Blast
Fire Chief Alfred Apps mourns as his son David is lost in the disaster. Eleven fire companies with 35 pieces of equipment and about 200 firefighters, many volunteers, battled the blaze aided by Erie Fire Chief George Hamburger and the county’s snorkel truck. Dozens of area departments joined the response as backups stood by. In Sedalia Missouri, two youths Charles Bryant and Frank Doogs climbed a new bull dozer, started it, and it rolled over Bryant’s car and a fence before stopping.
