When Kids Play Ball Today and Old Timers’ Memory
A Corry Journal columnist laments modern youth baseball practices. He recalls Western Pennsylvania games of his youth using a taped nickel rocket ball, a single bat, and improvised fields, arguing kids should earn money and learn to work for gear rather than beg. He recalls cooperative play, community effort, and the value of participation while questioning organized fundraisers and parental involvement. He contrasts past simplicity with today’s demand for equipment, treats beggars, and sanctioned play, urging self-reliance and earned rewards.
