Fredonia seniors cancel trip fund to help classmate with cancer

Fredonia High School seniors who planned a California trip voted to forgo most of the savings and instead donated 1000 to Mike Hatch to aid his cancer treatment. The class had saved about 1000 since eighth grade for the trip and will use 700 for a trip to Lake Powell. External fundraisers and gifts from the San Diego area will cover the rest, including zoo and Sea World admissions and reduced Disneyland rates. Hatch, just released after a four day hospital stay, is expected to join the 30 person group by bus if no complications arise.

Without Pact Coal Strike Seems Likely

United Mine Workers President Arnold Miller warned that a strike by northeastern Pennsylvania anthracite miners is a virtual certainty next week unless a new contract is agreed. The union, representing 2,300 miners and about 15,000 pensioners, faces a midnight Monday deadline as wage talks resume after the weekend. The union seeks wage gains, sick leave, disability coverage, better medical benefits, a cost of living escalator, and higher pension royalties, arguing coal prices have doubled since the last contract.
