France weighs bold 280 mile transcontinental canal plan
The French Senate weighs a Bordeaux to Narbonne canal to connect Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. If built the waterway would span 280 miles, be 280 feet wide, deep enough for ocean liners, and cost about 2 billion dollars. It would aid transport, allow French fleet reach both seas, and boost international commerce linking to North Africa and India. Some Americans doubt the net benefit by 1 10th of the cost, opposing extension of Atlantic navigation via the St Lawrence route.
