In Atlanta on March 27, 750 German navy officers and men who sought refuge on cruisers Kron Prince Wilhelm and Prinz Eitel Frederich were moved by special trains to Fort McPherson and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and confined in barbed wire stockades under Seventeenth Infantry guard. About 400 from Wilhelm were sent to McPherson, 350 from Eitel Frederich to Oglethorpe, with marines guarding the trip from Philadelphia. Captain Thierfeldt resisted pledges as Colonel Noyes assured care, with officials housing them in fortified barracks and expecting future conditions to depend on the men. Lieutenant Berg and prize crew from the raid were among those sent to Fort Oglethorpe.
