Sports expansion boom fades as pro leagues face contraction
AP report traces the rise and crash of modern pro sports growth from the 1960s boom to the 1970s retrenchment. It notes expansion across football, basketball, hockey and baseball, rising franchise costs, debt, and waning fan interest, with bids for more teams cooling and talks of consolidation. Named figures include Bowie Kuhn and John Y. Brown, while teams such as the Padres and cities like Seattle and Tampa are cited in context.
