Pittman Eyes Trade Pact as Step Toward Soviet Recognition
United States Senator Pittman chairing the foreign relations committee says a commercial treaty with Soviet Russia should precede any decision on recognition. He notes possible benefits in trade and warns against hasty recognition, emphasizing language to curb anti United States propaganda and to protect U.S. institutions. He adds that current U.S.–Soviet relations are friendlier than they would be after abrupt recognition and withdrawal.
