A Britisher in a wheelchair became an American citizen on his 100th birthday in Columbus Iowa. Nicholas Latimer Charles Martindale took the oath before U.S. District Court Judge J Robert Elliott. Blast Rips Tanker San Jacinto Off Virginia Coast
An explosion early today ripped the American tanker San Jacinto off the Virginia coast 40 miles from port. One crew member was killed as the ship broke in two and the stern bobbed in 1 000-foot seas while the master and most of the crew remained aboard awaiting lift. Two crew members transferred to the Mobile Pegasus and the steward M Dotilla died apparently of natural causes.
