A collision 22 miles east of Atlantic City left one crew member dead and six injured on the tanker Yalehem after the Grace Diner Santy Rosa cut into its engine room. The liner carried 265 passengers to New York from Nassau and evacuated them to the Santa Clara. Coast Guard aircraft supplied fire extinguishers and medevaced the seriously injured. both vessels remained joined for hours before separation.
A pre Easter snow storm swept from the Rockies into the Midwest with violent weather in the plains and Mississippi Valley. The year’s worst snow battered Colorado, Wyoming, and western Nebraska with waist high drifts and heavy snowfall slowing Denver. Tornadoes and freezing weather hit Texas and Oklahoma. roads blocked, buses halted, and schools closed as drifts forced nighttime sheltering and rural students to stay in town schools.

A head on collision on Route 885 in suburban West Mifflin killed one driver and left three injured including a 6-month-old girl. Andrew J. Seres, 4, of Bethel Park died on arrival at Homestead Hospital. Chester Pollock, 2, his wife Thelma 22, and their infant Cynthia Pollock were admitted to the same hospital. Pollock was most seriously hurt.
The Chamber of Commerce prepares its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday with three sites Mead Park Wright School and Fourth Ward Playground supervised by Milton Cherry Lester Lewis and Leon Root. Some 864 eggs to be found by 288 children with a Golden Egg at each site and prizes donated by local businesses including Ritz Restaurant and GLF Eger Service.
World War II veteran Orville Beam, 44, and his 8 year old son Frank were found dead in a car in a garage near the Beam apartment in Avalon. Mrs Victoria Beam, who works as a night maintenance worker, said she found the bodies after returning home from work. Coroner said they were dead at least 10 hours with the ignition key on.

Federal inspectors later said the contaminated fish was confined to a small area near Philadelphia and the family dinner tested high in sodium nitrite. The Donald Kleinschmidt family suffered illness. the youngest died at Cooper Hospital Camden. Two brothers and a sister were seriously ill. FDA officials were informed of the cause. three women also fell ill after eating fish in a Philadelphia restaurant.
A two story recreation building at Slippery Rock State Teachers College was destroyed by fire discovered about 4 30 am. Firemen from three companies prevented spread to other buildings. The Student Hut served as a meeting and recreation area. six residents in the east wing were away for Easter. President Norman Welsenfluh reported some books and belongings lost. insurance coverage exists though damage value was not yet set.

Geneva Mie Mitchell, 37, mother of 12, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in her 9 year old daughter’s death. She was found to have teased the child in the custody of a 9 year old son while at a tavern. An electric heater fire started by the girl’s clothing led to fatal injuries. Mitchell received an indefinite term in the Muncy State Prison for Women.
Two people died and another was burned fighting brush fires in western Pennsylvania on Wednesday. State officials urged caution as most fires were blamed on trash burning. incidents stretched from south mountain near Waynesboro to Buchanan Valley and several others in the area.
A three year old Sparta boy suffered second and third degree burns when his pant leg ignited at a bonfire his father started at home. Brian Mortis, son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Morris, received burns on three quarters of one side of his left leg and was rushed to Corry Memorial Hospital where his condition is reported as sublafactory today.
A fire at an old folks home started in the electrical control room after a lightning strike. Residents were evacuated and later returned as the blaze was confined to one ground floor room with most switches. The transformer outside triggered the incident. damage estimate not available. The Lutheran Church operates the home.
AP reports miner Prank Rasmussen, 35, survived a premature blast that shattered his leg as two sticks of dynamite exploded in a Death Valley tunnel. Partner Harry Boyer raced to pull Rasmussen free, then carried him to safety and hospital for X rays. Rasmussen suffered a crushed leg and back injuries but lived through the dangerous accident.
Three men face trial on April 20 for kidnapping a 22 year old woman from Chester West Virginia. Wilbert D. Brnith, 28, of Hammersburg Clarion County Pennsylvania, pleaded not guilty to charges of abducting Dorothy Amédea into Pennsylvania.
