Dem Alternates Discussed in 1952 Democratic Race
A Chicago weekend report notes Stevenson backers view Sen. Stuart Symington of Missouri as a rising dark horse. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas denies candidacy. Gov. Allan Shivers of Texas declines to pledge support, saying choices depend on conditions. Senator Allen Ellender of Louisiana welcomes Chandler as a possible nominee and warns the South could form a third party if Kefauver or Harriman lead the ticket. Harriman, in Florida, says New York political forces want him available for the nomination.

Readinger Seeks Tax Link To Referendum On Bonus
Readinger aims to bring the measure back to the floor with a graduated income tax attached, a plan opposed by veterans groups who warn it could end veterans' payments. The Joint Veterans Council says ten organizations fear the tax tieup would kill the bonus. They prefer a stand alone referendum to authorize $150 million in bonds and a constitutional amendment required before any graduated tax could be levied, needing two legislatures and a public vote. Meanwhile, talks resume between House and Senate leaders over pay raises for lawmakers, judges and top executives as the governor signals tax revenue needs to rise to salvage the boosts. Speaker Andrews says the pay hikes face trouble without more revenue.
