Safeguarding Walkers On Night Highways Findings

The Geneva Electete Company tested pedestrian safety measures at night and found bright car headlights often fail to reveal walkers in time. White clothing or a white handkerchief proved the most reliable signals, while dark clothing rendered pedestrians invisible even at 400 feet. General Electric researchers note pedestrians resist wearing signals, so they favor sighted highways with regular street lamps. Such lighting would reveal pedestrians directly or by silhouette, suggesting lighted highways may become common and arguing for dedicated pedestrian paths along roads.
