Rome reports Italy ready to hold direct talks with Yugoslavia over Trieste and the free territory. A March 24 furnace accident at Bethlehem Steel Corp left four workers dead and two others critically burned. Augustus Kelecht of Nazareth died at a hospital. Vale Lukasevich of Walnutport and Frank Bobgel of Easton survived with severe burns. The blast occurred during shutdown of the furnace when coke ground, parts of the tuyere plugs blew out, and hot coke sprayed the area.
Route 6 traffic resumed today after repairs following last year’s flood damage. Lane closures and detours were in place while crews rebuilt the washed out eastern bridge approach and repaired the highway west of Corry to Beaverdam.

The House approves a one year compromise rent control plan in a 220 to 95 vote. It sets up a federal reporting role with final say on increases, trimming local and state authority and delaying decontrol unless approved.
