Babson Park March 25 During World War I city real estate prices rose and fell with cycles. Postwar demand for suburban land increased but inflation fears and lagging urban growth limit any immediate boom. Population shifts toward suburbs may not sustain a city land surge.
Associated Press reports a knife-like blast at the Katherine No 4 coal mine in Shinnston West Virginia traps and likely kills 14 workers who had entered to fight a raging fire. A 15th man is unaccounted for though not listed among known in the mine. Rescue halted to repair a damaged ventilation system as the fire raged near the end of a 3000 foot slope.

At a Friday afternoon council meeting Mayor Hepler announced the late appointment of G H Gordon to serve as police magistrate for a four year term starting January 1. The recommendation earned unanimous council approval. The magistrate’s compensation is paid from city funds.

Two boys aged 18 and 14 were held on murder charges in Atlantic City after the shooting death of 3 year old Stephen Rules. Detectives say a .38 calibre revolver fired at Atlantic City Justice High School led to the fatality. The 14 year old allegedly brought the weapon to school and the older boy fired. The victim, Stephen Rules, died from a bullet wound to the chest.
Irene Mullen treasurer announced the city cut indebtedness by 10500 in the present month. Two loans totaling 34500 from A O Sandburg and 64000 to cover road needs were settled. A 2000 temporary loan was used for a recent purchase. Bonded debt now stands at 40100 with a 4800000 property valuation. Statewide debt reduction cited by Harrisburg. Continued on Page Four.
