Believe Canal Project Is Launched Too Late

The Waterways Journal editor argues the Allegheny Valley bears the cost of waking up late to a canal plan linking the Ohio River with Lake Erie. The piece notes Pittsburgh and Youngstown backing a route via Ashtabula, while Franklin, Oil City, Meadville, and Erie oppose, preferring a Lake Erie link via the Allegheny to Franklin, French Creek to Meadville, and an artificial canal to Erie. It contrasts population centers, noting Erie’s 115,000 and oil interests, with the Youngstown route seen as superior for impact.
