Pittsburgh reports that the German liner Europa has set a new record for the Atlantic. Naval parley may adjourn for six months as observers note strategic shifts. Political jockeying continues over Pennsylvania judicial tickets with Mellon and Grundy–Lewis factions aligning to influence the May primary.
Twenty five members of the Allegheny College Glee Club toured towns for ibriet concerts and gave a half hour program before Senior High pupils in the auditorium yesterday afternoon. They arrived by bus and also played a short concert in Union City. Selections included On the Sea I Passed by White Winding and Twilight among others. The group closed with Allegheny College arts and a piano piece In Tieme et Roses. Mrs B A Hewitt of Drie, visiting in the city, was a guest of friends enroute home.
Cleveland authorities recovered a roadster and many auto accessories taken in a February 28 theft. Constable Elboa Jarrow and Chief John Ruppersburg arrested Paul Casper at a farm near Welch Hill after a search found the car and loot hidden in a barn. Caspar admitted travel from Cleveland but denied stealing the car.
Pennsylvania Democrats nominated John Hemp hill of West Chester and Guy Bard of Lancaster for governor and lieutenant governor after withdrawal of incumbents Lawrence Rupp and W C Bambrick. The slate also includes Sedgwick Kistler US senator Lucy Winston for secretary of internal affairs Henry Niles for supreme court George Douglas and Aaron Reiher for superior court. Rumors of reorganizing the Pennsylvania Rubber Co at Jeannette are denied as baseless.
A Lodge coupe driven by Charles Linski stalled on the West Smith Street grade crossing at noon, blocking a Buffalo bound train. Linski cried out for help from his employer at Perneuil Alling station, and workers shoved the car off the tracks just as the train halted within sight.
Ralph E. Irwin chief of the bureau of milk control spoke to more than thirty local producers at the Municipal building in Philadelphia. He explained how the state milk code will affect mills and producers and emphasized that the new laws promise supervision without drastic changes to current local health rules. Miss Ethel Bertram from Westeuyills Pa. is in town on business.
Charles R. Campbell of Erie will organize and direct the school band. He will spend one day weekly in the schools, with Tuesday set for band instruction and rehearsals. About 75 pupils applied for instruments, and the group will be reduced to 24. The Rotary Club is purchasing instruments via M. S. Fuller of the Bis EN. White AMusic Company.
The Europa, hailed as the blue ribbon Atlantic liner, arrived in New York after a record 4 days 17 hours 7 minutes crossing from Cherbourg beating sister Bremen. 1900 passengers aboard, officials in New York and Bremen revised times to 4 days 17 hours 6 minutes, captain Nicholas Johnson lauded the feat.
In New Castle on March 25 the jury for the Glenn Dague murder case was completed with the selection of Mrs Daisy Mekethben as forewoman. The Commonwealth aims to convict Dague of first degree murder for the death of highway patrolman Brady Paul while Dague and Irene Schroeder are linked to a prior store robbery. Schroeder already convicted played a role in the incident and Dague is charged as an accessory in the felony resulting in Paul’s death. Proceedings shifted to witness testimony from physicians who treated Paul as the trial nears a verdict.
Telegrams announced the deaths of John C. McMahon of Mt Morris Pa and Frank McMahon age 85, brother of Mortimer McMahon and Joseph McMahon, with services expected in Corry. John C. McMahon died in East Liverpool Ohio during a business trip after chronic heart trouble. Frank McMahon, sick with a severe cold, died in Chicago. Survived by Mortimer S McMahon of Chicago and siblings Mrs Huces, Mrs Foley, Miss Della, Elizabeth, Kathryn, and Cassie. The Rotary Club heard Dr. Renyi speak on how laymen can improve schools and discussed fireworks ban supported by Kiwanis.
A severe blizzard stormed the Chicago area on March 25 piling drifts on streets and hindering travel in the Loop where visibility was poor. Dozens of motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents were reported and Edgar Tompkins, 42, died after slipping on a sidewalk in heavy winds with his work broken.
