In New York on March 22, steel executives denounced the Wage Stabilization Board pay rise and union shop recommendations as inflationary and disruptive. They warned a 174 to 177 cent hourly increase plus a union shop would raise costs by about 30 cents per hour, potentially costing the industry a billion dollars annually. The industry called the proposals a backward step, saying they would derail stabilization efforts and impose costly terms on both sides.
The Western Penna Vain Asphalt Paving Co of Evie bid 169 607 for resurfacing 24.8 miles of Route 6 near Gerry with crushed aggregate and bituminous surface 20 feet wide, plus reinforced concrete culvert work and a 20 foot wide resurfacing from Range's Corners westward. A large tornado outbreak swept Arkansas Tennessee Missouri and Mississippi causing widespread destruction. Arkansas reported 193 dead and over a thousand injured with hit towns including Judsonia Balt Knob and Searcy severely damaged. Rescue efforts continued as power and communications failed.
