Vice Admiral Howard L. Vickery died from a heart attack hours after arriving in Palm Springs for medical care. The retired deputy chairman of the Maritime Commission, he led ship design and construction for the Merchant Marine since 1937 until health forced retirement last December. Mrs. Vickery was with him. A son, Commander Hugh Vickery, is stationed at Long Beach. Burial planned for Washington, D. C., home. Barbara, a daughter, resides there. Vickery was a native of Bellevue, Ohio.

A 27 year old man named John Wright McDowell Jr was held on a charge of attempting to kidnap two seven year old girls in St Petersburg Florida. He was being questioned about the mutilation slaying of De sian Degnan six. McDowell claimed to be the adopted son of a late Peoria banker John McDowell. Foster mother Mrs Pearl McDowell was cited. Detective Chief John S Slers said the arrest followed a complaint filed Wednesday.
