UN BEIRUT TALKS ON WOMEN RIGHTS AMENDMENT VIEWS
Opponents led by Judge Dorothy Kenyon of New York City challenge the amendment and argue the UN Charter does not compel U S congressional action. Sixteen UN member nations attend the Beirut meeting to study reports on conflicts between national laws affecting married women domicile marriage and divorce and treaties on nationality with recommendations due by April 4. The Commission has urged member states to guarantee equal rights and equal pay for work of equal value across all spheres.

Equal Rights for Women Advances in Senate Amid UN Talks
The U S Senate Judiciary Committee approved the proposed equal rights amendment for the first time unanimously. Introduced in 1923, it has grown in support across generations with about 35 national groups backing it, while major unions and many organizations oppose, citing potential harms to protective labor laws and family support provisions. Proponents argue women lack full constitutional citizenship and urge broad protections, while opponents warn of legislative reversals affecting women’s work and status.
