Crash Kills 18 Blamed On Pilot Instrument Failure
The Civil Aeronautics Board linked two fatal crashes last fall to pilots not using instruments in bad weather. Northeast Airlines DC3 at New Bedford killed 11, including the pilot and copilot, with 7 others injured. A private Lockheed Lodestar owned by Standard Oil of Ohio crashed near Uniontown, killing 7 aboard. The board cited failure to obtain weather forecasts and improper visual flight under instrument conditions as the probable causes.
