Philadelphia reports optimistic talks between Rapid Transit officials and striking workers. Governors and city officials seek a peaceful end, with possible concessions on conductor and motorman discipline. A tentative deal aims to avert a statewide strike by Monday.
Fifty laborers on an ice floe near Peterhof were swept into the Gulf of Finland by a sudden wind. Horses and carts were on the floe when it broke away. relief boats and crews were sent, but all men aboard are believed lost.
