Bombed Viet Cong Caves Near Da Nang Foiled by CS Gas
U S Marines detonated CS riot gas charges in a vast cave complex near Da Nang to deny Viet Cong use. Caves in the Que Son range 35 miles southwest of Da Nang are large enough to hide 400 to 500 soldiers, with Marines estimating about 40 North Vietnamese troops used them Sunday to escape. Despite three days of searching, enemy troops were not found, and officials warned exits may remain undiscovered. In other clashes, three Americans were killed and four wounded at a camp northwest of Qui Nhon, while US forces reported multiple enemy casualties along the Saigon border area and a helicopter was shot down in Kien Giang Province.

Pittsburgh based AP reports two U.S. Bureau of Mines chemists discovered a method to convert shredded garbage into heavy crude oil.
