Pennsylvania Railroad optimistic on 1985 outlook amid deficit drop
The annual report shows James M. Symes citing optimism for 1985 as passenger losses shrink from 56.6 million to 43.7 million. Freight revenue falls 20 percent from 1953 due to lower steel demand, while operating revenues mark a postwar low. Nearby notes report a bill to transfer Moon to a state prison, local well activity near Titusville, and community notices on memorial services, trout stocking, accidents, and weather outlook.

Stalin Move Influenced by Size of U.S. Troops in Europe
The Yalta conference papers released by the State Department suggest Roosevelt believed U S troops would not stay in Europe for more than two years after the war and would not station troops in Korea. The disclosures imply Soviet strategy may have counted on weariness after World War II to push communism through political and military pressure while anticipating U S action against Japan and UN collaboration. The Nation notes a two-year window before a strong Anglo American partnership fully formed and cites Roosevelt’s confidences to Stalin, including plans to push an international trusteeship in Indochina and Churchill’s fears about British power in Burma.
