Erie County officials and residents plan the first General Good Roads Day modeled after other states. Supervisors call a special meeting to organize county efforts including road tidying and removing rock from highways. The event aims to boost public spirit and show immediate road improvements.
Washington March 17 President Wilson wore a green necktie and a small Shamrock in his hat. No box of Shamrock was reported, though Ireland sent twenty regalia to the White House earlier. He has kept the tradition alive and noted the gesture.
A twenty five ton flywheel burst at the Kinoln Steel Company plant injuring several workers. Hrina Olo sheki, a workman, was instantly killed as steel fragments scattered through the mill during full operation. News agency dispatch notes the accident occurred early in the shift.
Two probes began today in Hinton West Virginia into the Lagland disaster that killed more than a hundred men at a New River Pocahontas Coal and Pike Company mine. Investigators will cover every phase of the accident and its probable causes. The state faces at least 150000 dollars in compensation for victims' relatives.
Meadville March 17 The Crawford county court awarded no plaintiff a judgment for ten thousand dollars in the Woods versus Northwestern Railway case. The verdict marks one of the county's largest awards. The defendant railway, operating the Meadville and Tilsy electric Line, plans to appeal. Mrs Woods, a Meadville resident, suffered severe injuries after falling through a trap door in the Meadvill waiting room area.
Twenty tramps seized a freight train on the Lake Shore line near Hartford last midnight. They boarded as it passed and set the brakes, stopping the train. The robbers then raided eight box cars, taking rifles and revolvers and several cases of wine. Local authorities pursue suspects and investigate damages.
A group of prominent Maccabees from this city heads to Briefnia for the district convention to be held at the county seat. Mrs Marka, delegate of the Corry Hive, is accompanied by Mesdames Stennelt, Murray, Young, Craker and Palmer. A large turnout of district members from the region is expected in Brife today.
A decisive impeachment move was introduced in the Harrisburg House by Representative Sinclair of Fayette. The resolution seeks a five member committee appointed by the Speaker to investigate and decide if charges warrant a trial, with the Speaker referring the motion back to the Judiciary General committee for action.
Amid rumors of renewed war activity, reports from Uskub and other centers indicate spreading unrest in the Balkans. Austria and Italy near parity in strength while Bulgaria moves troops toward the Turkish frontier. demonstrations rise in northern towns and Rome braces for a potential crisis.
Yalpuraiso March 17 denying reports that the German cruiser Dresden was mine. Lt Commander Plesling of the Ocean says the Dresden was sighted by the British twelve miles off Jown Feeninder Tyand and destroyed after a brief chase. Wounded German crew praise the British rescue while denying the sinking claim.
A worker assisting his son during a lay near the city suffered serious bruises and was thrown from a runaway cart. The injuries were not considered life threatening, and the man identified as Mr Raymond was treated locally and remained under observation.
London reports from Athens stating Turkish reinforcements and heavy guns failed to reoccupy batteries at the Dardanelles. French and British fleet actions prevented Turkish artillery positions north of the main assault, driving them back from all crossings and leaving fortifications further inside the strait under Allied control.
The British merchant ship Blonde arrived at Tyne river anchorage reporting an aerial attack by a German aeroplane. A bomb hit the vessel and killed one crew member. This marks the first British merchant ship to suffer a real air attack, though others had narrowly escaped damage.
March reports from Lomiley state two British vessels were sunk by German submarines. The Atlanta was torpedoed off Talahtark DML, the crew saved. The Fingal was sunk off Northumberland after being forced ashore with six men reported aboard.
Bradford Police Captain Moomy arrived this morning to take Lucier back to Bradford to face a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. The suspect, held by the local Department yesterday, cashed a check to A. C. Stengel in Bradford on February 18 and drowned on a bank in Osten. No other such charges are known in the city. The officer and prisoner will depart Bradford this afternoon.
