At about 7 pm a passing car southbound on Route 6 east of Mill Village collided with a Mill Village Volunteer Fire Company truck after misreading a left turn signal. Philip A. Papatuil, 20, Waterford, was driving behind Ernest R. Blumb, 29, Waterford, when the truck signaled left turn. Damage totaled $175 with no injuries reported.
Henry H. Timken Jr., 61, board chairman of the Timken Roller Bearing Co, died last night of a heart attack in Washington while attending a business conference. A Cane Ton, Ohio native and Harvard graduate, he was named director of the firm at age two.
An unidentified driver fled after his car crashed into Pine Grove Cemetery on North Center Street near Columbus Avenue. Frank Bielawski reported the damage to police. The vehicle damaged the Bible monument and shrubs before stopping near a tree. two track sets show the driver fled in two directions along nearby shrubbery and toward East Columbus Avenue. Three people were injured in a head on collision between two autos a mile west of Mill Village on Route 6 shortly after 5 p m yesterday. Ruth Hewit 56 of Union City suffered multiple fractures and was hospitalized in Erie. Mary M Arter 60 of Cambridge Springs also hospitalized with multiple cuts and bruises. Metro Starks 54 of Waterford was treated later at St Vincent s Erie hospital for lacerations rib fractures and internal injuries. Property damage was 3200 to the Arter auto and 4000 to the Sturko vehicle.
In a central coast operation near Quang Ngai City, US infantrymen of the 11th Light Infantry Brigade fought guerrillas in rice paddies and sand dunes. A second company was dropped by helicopter as heavy combat continued. Helicopter gunships and artillery supported the advance while American casualties were not yet reported. The six day total of enemy slain rose to 394 with 83 suspects detained in Saigon’s big operation.
A Union City man, Alex J. Denche, 21, was cited for five vehicle code violations after a high speed pursuit that began at North Center and Washington streets and ended along Stewart Road. Charges include three counts of running red signals and one each of reckless driving and failure to obey police signals. Additional charges may be filed for offenses outside city limits.
An additional meningitis case arose in an elderly Erie County near Warren with restrictions on visiting. The initial outbreak began at Paul W. Frazer 46 a native of East Brody and a psychiatry patient. Earlier two patients at the state mental hospital died. more recent reports mention a Corry boy, an 83 year old Franklin resident, and a Pittsburgh child affected by the disease.
Sen Robert F Kennedy formally announces his bid for president saying he runs to propose new policies and end bloodshed. He says change is needed to close gaps between rich and poor and to preserve America’s hope. The move comes as Sen Eugene McCarthy gains momentum in New Hampshire and Wisconsin races amid party opposition.
HARRISBURG AP The Shafer administration asks the Senate to delay a 52 million House approved bill to raise teachers wages. Budget chief Sampson cites need to adjust funding within Gov Shafer 2 billion budget. Speaker Lee says no welfare or scholarship cuts. tax increases likely next year to cover a 500 across the board rise and a raise from 4500 to 6000. PSEA President Standa objects, noting boards are negotiating 1966 69 salaries.
The city police warned residents about two groups of tree trimmers operating in Corry under verbal homeowner contracts. Reports of complaints from nearby areas followed. Trimmers, not tied to known firms or utilities, price high after job completion. Police urge verification of licenses and permits with the department and to insist on written contracts.
