City Council in a brief session opened bids for an air compressor for the streets department. It heard the Lawrence Airport airstrip will cost more than the original estimate. The body agreed to study parking and traffic rules on three streets and considered replacing the Hare Creek bridge on Sciota Street.

An overworked steam bath ignited woodwork, causing extensive smoke damage throughout the house but only minor fire damage. At 7:54 last evening a neighbor spotted smoke and alerted responders. Six men and multiple units rushed to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze.
