States Lose High Court Challenge Over Public Lands
The Supreme Court refused Alabama and Rhode Island permission to sue, ruling Congress may transfer title to coastal lands. The action sought to test the 1953 act asserting deprival of equitable oil resources valued around 50 billion dollars and 62 million in royalties. The majority said Congress has power over public lands and that claim lacked justification.
