A Senate committee leader signals a broad study of ethics in film and television. Lawmakers intend to consider stricter rules amid a Bergman Rossellini affair that has sparked sharp debate and public fireworks.
The Senate commerce committee scheduled an April hearing on Hollywood morals. Chairman Bawin C. dohingon urged licenses for actors and producers and a $10,000 permit for interstate film shipments. FCC chief Wayne Coy warned broadcasters to clean up crime and crude humor or face government action.
President Truman sails toward a three week vacation aboard the USS Williamsburg with a presidential party. The convoy, escorted by a destroyer, is six miles off Jacksonville Florida and set to reach West Key later with navigators plotting a course toward St Augustine and Fort Pierce.
Three infants Thomas Carey aged 1, Dominic Carey aged 2, and Kathleen Carey aged 3 died in a house fire in Bridgewater. Parents Kay and Mary Carey formerly of Vineland NJ were away from home when the blaze swept through. Fire cause undetermined at report time.
The State Department ordered John E Peurifoy to testify in a loyalty review. Senator McCarthy named nine employees as subversive or security risks and gave a list of 25 others. Dorothy Kenyon denied Communist ties as the inquiry expands with discussions on speeding up the probe. Two Pittsburgh police officials died of heart attacks, James Hoey and Captain Zven Williams.
The Corry Chapter of the American Red Cross reports $1200 raised in its 1950 campaign led by R Lawrence Davison. About $700 came from residential solicitors and the rest from the business district. The drive, now at under 20 percent of the $6073 goal, was slowed by bad weather and will continue later in the month.
Local dealers report a likely 25 cent per ton increase in soft coal prices following the United Mine Workers wage hike. Hand picked soft coal may range 12.50 to 12.70 a ton, with stoker coal at 12 a ton pending supplier word. Hard coal remains around 20.75 a ton in egg grade, with other areas already lifting prices.
In Reno on March 15, a will contest alleges Temple University pressed a Philadelphia surgeon to favor the institution with exaggerated care to gain wealth. The suit by Mrs. Janice Chase King seeks to overturn gifts totaling 1.4 million dollars from Dr. Theodore Chase to Temple, with about 9,400 dollars at stake in the remainder.
In London on March 15 Britain's Labour government won a third consecutive Conservative bid to censure spending policies by 308 to 289, granting Labour a margin of 18. Chancellor Cripps announced a halt to expansion of the National Health Service and urged restraint across ministries. The health service seeks extra appropriations for 1949-1950 totaling about 146.4 million dollars, with the Bevin-led NHS pushing for funds while Cripps warned cuts may occur.
Windell Whit and two white men face murder charges for the January 8 massacre of four people including four year old Ruby Nell Harris in Attala county. Prosecutor Henry Rodgers says death penalty would be sought in each case with trial this week.
Bishop Ger id P O Hara said by telephone from Bucharest that reports of his impending arrest in Communist Romania are all nonsense. The Vatican envoy commented on an American Broadcasting Company Rome report claiming he would be arrested on spy charges.
The Pennsylvania public assistance board approved a revised plan to provide a one time bonus to veterans while they remain on relief. The $50 million plan aims to avoid removing veterans from relief rolls by treating the bonus as non countable resources under federal rules. About 6200 veterans on relief would be affected by the change.
Pittsburgh reports a youth named Thomas Hermanowies from the North Side is cleared of involvement in a homicide case linked to a 3 year old girl named Miss Brisco. Detectives questioned him after a friend’s inconsistent statement and later retracted it. The case involves a rape and death four months prior near her home.
A robbery at a Philadelphia area residence drew police with a 1947 Dodge getaway car. Three men, ages 20 to 35, robbed owner Hahn, took cash from his wallet, and fled toward Cony. Police described one gunman as 5 ft 8 in, stocky, light brown hair. Other details and varying dollar amounts reported caused community disbelief and skepticism.
The University of Pittsburgh secured a $3,000 grant from Swift and Company to renew a four year study on human nutrition. The funds were announced on March 15 in Pittsburgh.

Gary Indiana March 15 three men were found shot to death on a farm near Gary. Farmhand Michael Saganovich was arrested. Victims include Paul Shuman and his nephew Tynace Gerahonek. A shotgun wound killed Shuman. a 22 caliber rifle lay near his body. Gerahonek died of a head wound.

A Pennsylvania committee from alex-county penal af hire Comenillee organized a luncheon project to study methods for treating psychopaths. Judges Mosk Hayley and EyIe were named to head the inquiry.
