Nixon denies knowledge of CIA Chile coup efforts
Former President Richard Nixon testifies before the Senate intelligence committee that he did not learn of CIA plans to undermine Salvador Allende in Chile and that he approved certain domestic intelligence techniques as used by prior administrations. He cites possible illegal methods but says he withdrew approval after FBI objections. Nixon also discusses wiretaps and mail opening, and disputes on who directed taps. Separately, the Robin Hood Dell Concerts move to Fairmount Park, opening June 14 with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
