Senate minority leader Everett Dirksen declared the United States has blown the trumpets of retreat too long and must take a firm stand against the Soviets. He spoke on a TV radio program with Senator Miller after criticism from Senator Fulbright who argued that no concession is the aim and that U S gains in the Cold War show some success. Fulbright cited Iran 1946 Berlin 1949 and Cuba 1962 as lessons and said Americans demanding hard lines risk obstructing accommodation.

Lows usage on these Hoboken to Chicago trains shows fewer than one boarding and about one off per trip, with mail and express service to continue. Similar decline prompted PRR to end similar services. EL argues freight, not passenger demand, justifies discontinuance.
