U S Fifth Air Force routed remnants of Japan s air force during a 120 ton strike on WeWak the major base in New Guinea Marines on Wotho island and Willa umez peninsula in New Britain pressed forward as Bougainville gains continued Allied forces reported heavy fighting at Empress Augusta Bay. MacArthur said the raid on WeWak was one of the heaviest in weeks leaving gun positions smashed and the air base burning with tanks and ships accounted for.
